Best Dirt Bike Helmet

When it comes to the best dirt bike helmet, you absolutely cannot prioritize price over safety. In motocross, a concussion is certainly one of the most common injuries you will see on the track. Nearly half of all riders under the age of 18 have experienced a concussion, as well as 0.18% of all total riders – with me being one of them.

By choosing a high quality dirt bike helmet, such as the one listed below, you can ensure that you have the safest ride possible. Let’s not forget, some of the best features and style on the market that come with it!

Importance of Choosing the Right Dirt Bike Helmet

Not only was safety a concern when choosing the best dirt bike helmet of 2023, but other features came in to play such as air flow, comfort, durability, styling, price, and more. Over my 20+years of racing dirt bikes, I have tried helmet brands such as SixSixOne, Fox Racing, AGV, O’neal, Answer Racing, and many, many more.

Best Dirt Bike Helmet

I have made the mistake of using cheap dirt bike helmets and having some pretty gnarly crashes while wearing them. Let me tell you, it does not feel good! Another factor that I tend to look out for is how light the helmet is. This may not even cross the mind of some riders, but once you try on a helmet made from a light material such as Carbon Fiber, you will be mind-blown.

Top Features to Consider in a Dirt Bike Helmet

Things to consider for the best dirt bike helmet for you should be a variety of factors such as your riding style, skill level, and budget. Personally, the biggest features I look out for with a new helmet are safety, design, air flow, and price point.

Best Dirt Bike Helmet

Helmets do not need to be replaced nearly as often as other gear such as goggles or gloves. With this being said, it is wise to spend a bit of extra money for a helmet that will not only keep you safe, but also last for years to come.

The Author’s Choice: Fox Racing V3 RS Helmet

After rigorous research and testing, as well as utilizing personal experience, I have chosen the Fox Racing V3 RS Helmet as my best dirt bike helmet for 2023. Here’s why:

Superior Protection:

As you would expect from a top-of-the-line helmet, the Fox Racing V3 RS Helmet offers some of the most notable safety features and certifications:

  • MIPS(Multi-Directional Impact Protection System)
  • A Dual-density Varizorb™ EPS liner disperses the forces of an impact across a wider surface area to save your head
  • An EPP chin bar also helps to absorb impact, while lowering the overall weight
  • Super rigid, yet light shell made from carbon and FRP resins(MCT Technology)
  • Meets DOT and ECE 22.05 Standards

Amazing styling:

The Fox Racing V3 RS helmet comes in well over 10 styles, allowing you to match any dirt bike, or set of gear that you own.

My personal favorite is the “Dark Shadow” style, which is shown below. The glossy black shell really makes those cool-looking air vents pop. On top of this, the shape of the helmet is absolutely stunning with the sleek cuts and air channels.

In my opinion, the styling of this helmet looks years ahead of the competition. Another feature which has got to be one of my favorites, is the Magnetic visor, which allows it to detach before breaking off. This is done by utilizing a center post magnet as well as two shear-off screws which will absorb the impact and save your visor.

Incredible Ventilation:

One of the first features that stands out, is that the Fox Racing V3 RS Helmet is covered in air-ventilation screens. Don’t let this give you the wrong impression however, as these vents do not take away from the structural integrity of the helmet at all.

When riding in extreme heat or racing long races such as Motocross main events or Enduro races, it is absolutely crucial that you stay as cool as possible to avoid over-heating you body and becoming dehydrated. The removable and washable liner is antimicrobial and wicks moisture away from the head to keep you even cooler.

Competitive Price Point:

The Fox Racing V3 RS Helmet can be had for around $580 USD on Amazon. While this price point may seem a bit steep to some riders, you must keep in mind that this is a top notch MX helmet. With all of the same bells and whistles that come on other high-grade helmets, it is significantly cheaper than comparable helmets. For example, a Shoei VFX-EVO or an Arai XD4 could run you over $700.

How to Properly Fit a Dirt Bike Helmet

The easiest way to size the best dirt bike helmet for you is to go to a local retailer and try on some helmets. Do not just go with a size that feels comfortable, try what I call the “Shake Test”.

Strap the helmet like you would before riding and shake your head from side-to-side. There should be little to no movement. Repeat the process while shaking your head up and down and ensure you get the same result. This may feel a bit strange in the middle of a dirt bike shop, but some embarrassment now is better than a head injury later!

Maintenance and Care Tips

To clean/maintain your flashy new helmet, there are only a few things you will need:

  • Clean microfiber cloth
  • Mild detergent/soap
  • Warm water

Step 1: Remove Helmet Accessories

Start by removing any external accessories such as a Go-Pro, the visor, lights, mounts, or any other accessories. If your internal pads are dirty or have seen multiple sweaty rides, it’s probably a good idea to remove these as well. I recommend doing all of this on a desk or table to avoid losing or accidentally stepping on any parts. Set your helmet aside, and let’s get started on the accessories.

Step 2: Clean Accessories

Use your mild detergent mixed in with warm water to soak and hand wash the internal pads. Once enough soapy water has been ran through the pads and they look clean, take them out of the solution and rinse with running water to remove all of the soap. Squeeze and ring out the pads to remove as much water as possible. After this, allow the pads to sit in direct sunlight until they are completely dry.

Internal pads can also be washed in a washing machine, however you must place them in a washing bag and use a “gentle” or “hand wash” setting. The internal pads CANNOT be dried in a dryer machine, only direct sunlight as mentioned above.

Step 3: Clean Exterior

This is where your microfiber cloth comes in to play. Soak the cloth in your warm water and detergent solution, and start scrubbing at the helmet until it is squeaky clean. If necessary, a tooth brush or a similar tool can be used to help get dirt or grime out of the air vents and other crevices. I recommend soaking and scrubbing down your helmet straps in the solution because they will also get dirty and absorb sweat.

Step 4: Reassemble and Ride!

Once everything has dried up, reassemble all of your accessories and be sure to place each piece exactly where it came from. Re-adjust your visor if necessary, and ensure that all of the internal pads are fully snapped in. Once you double check that everything is in place and you did not miss any pieces during the reinstall, your ready to hop back on the bike!
